Tips by Kels

After being officially open for a year, I have gotten to experience SO many weddings, and seen SO many different hurdles my couples have overcome. Here are a few tips I have gathered throughout our first year, and I think would be helpful for any bride planning her big day. Disclaimer: These are just my opinions. Do what is right for you, and your wedding!

This Seems Simple … Hire good vendors and trust them to bring your wedding day dreams to life.

1. A Month of Coordinator (otherwise known as a “day of”) is a must! A good planner will keep everything organized, be in tune with your family dynamics, create your wedding timeline and keep everything on track. They will also create your floorplan, communicate with all vendors, successfully get you and your bridal party down the aisle, and take care of any problems that occur, big or small, and most likely you won’t even know about it. And, that is only scratching the surface of what they do. Remember if you have a family member doing this job they will most likely be a seated guest. If you will have over 150 guests I recommend your planner have an assistant.

2. A good caterer that serves and busses the food. Having a crew that clears all the trash, plates and tables is a huge help to all family members, your bridal party and vendors.

3. One Bartender per every 50 guests will help avoid lines and guests waiting.

4. Remember that your Planner, Photographer, and DJ will keep everything on time and on track.

Water! This is most often forgotten and needed, especially at the end of the night!

  • I know alcohol is on everyone’s mind, but trust me. Throwing in several packs of water will be a huge hit at the end of the night. Especially after everyone has been tearing it up on the dance floor.

Tidy up the bridal suite before the photographer arrives

  • This will help to avoid any trash in the background of any photos (Hello, Anthropologie mirrors galore). It will also save time, avoid stress and cut down on lost items at the end of the night when trying to clean up!

Table Numbers

  • It is important to have table numbers, or table names, at every table even if you don’t do a seating chart. This helps the planner and your DJ release tables to the buffet line. However, I always recommend a seating chart. I know it’s more time on the front end, but when it comes time for dinner everyone has a seat. It makes guests less obligated to pull up chairs wherever they want to be close to friends.

Have an end-of-the-night plan!

  • Who is taking what, what vendors are coming back and what is all to be thrown away? This means rentals (plates, napkins, linens), florals, leftover food and cake, and any personal decor you brought in. I recommend assigning different people different tasks. That way mother and father of the bride aren’t taking everything. In most cases, they won’t have room.

Remember … Just my opinion take it or leave it … No kids besides immediate family.

  • Oftentimes times I find myself just watching parents chase their very very tired, way-passed-bedtime, sugar-overdosed kids everywhere. More often than not, they look at me and are like, “Boy… I should have gotten a sitter.” You want your family and friends to have fun, and I can guarantee that the little nugget won’t remember it. You want your family and friends to have fun!

Money-Saving tip .. Use bridesmaid’s bouquets as extra centerpieces on tables.

  • Typically after ceremony photos, the beautiful bridesmaid’s bouquets (that aren’t cheap) just get thrown down or left up in the bridal suite. Put the vases on the table and after photos are done during cocktail hour just have the bridesmaids pop them in the vases on the table for some extra “wow factor”.

Wonderful day with longtime friends

The cool thing about 2021 .. no rules! Make your wedding day about you and your groom!

  • Whether you want alpacas at your cocktail hour (we really had alpacas at a cocktail hour once) or no dance party. Make your wedding the wedding of YOUR dreams.

Create a wedding email early and do all your wedding planning through that email so nothing gets lost!

  • Example: BecomingTheJohnsons@gmail.com

Get your wedding insurance.

  • Things happen, we require liability insurance but will always recommend getting cancelation insurance as well.

Skip the wedding favors!

  • These just all get left at the end of the night and are just more stuff for Mom and Dad to take home. Do a late-night snack instead. These are a huge hit!! There is nothing like a chocolate chip cookie for the drive home late at night.

Skip the Programs!

  • These all just get left out on the ceremony chairs! Have a sign on an easel with the timeline to let guests know the plan for the night. It saves a lot of pick-up at the end of the night. If you want guests to receive something when they arrive I would have a champagne truck or champagne wall. ( of course with TABC servers)

Get your wedding day “things” organized in advance so you don’t have to worry about it on the day of.

  • Have your security officer’s cash, any vendor tips or payments ready in envelopes so you don’t have to stress about it.

Feed your Girls!

  • Typically the girls get to the bridal suite around 9 AM to start getting ready! That is at least a 15-hour day. Make sure to take care of your best girls with breakfast and lunch! Most do Chick-fil-A trays or cheese boards. Both are always a hit!!

Take as many pictures as you can before the ceremony!

  • If you are anything like me, you are going to want to go celebrate with your family and friends as soon as possible. Even if you are not doing a first look, take as many photos as you can with your family, bridesmaids, and the groom with his family and groomsmen before your ceremony. That will cut down on the time you are taking photos after your ceremony and before your reception.

Don’t sweat the small stuff or lose sight of what’s happening

  • You’re getting married! Have fun and soak it all in!

Thankful For Our First Year!

Happy Birthday to the French Farmhouse! We are so thankful for the wonderful year we have had. So, we want to share some of the things we are thankful for.

1.Our amazing brides and grooms. You guys mean the world to us. We love watching you go from living the engaged life, planning and excited to start your life together, to married life. It is amazing. We even have our first Farmhouse baby coming soon!

Wonderful day with longtime friends

2.The incredible friends and families we have met at the venue. There are a lot of people that come through the venue! We are blessed, and biased, but we truly have gotten to know some of the best families around.

3.Talented vendors and wedding pros! From hair and make-up, florists, photographers, videographers, caterers to other venue owners. We have been so grateful to meet some of the best wedding pros in the area, who also happen to be some of the best people in the area.

4.The stunning styled shoots we have had, and the amazing online and print publications that have taken the time to see our venue. It is surreal to see how each shoot transforms the Farmhouse. It is also pretty nuts to see the venue pop up in magazines and online publications.

5.We are SO thankful for the valuable lessons we have learned along the way. There is still so much to learn, and we are eager to keep growing. Thank you so much for following along on the journey. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Kirby’s Steakhouse

Another great Steakhouse! They have amazing food and, since it is located in WinStar World Casino, there is pretty much all the entertainment you could dream of right outside the restaurant. As an added bonus, there is a hotel! It definitely feels wild to out-of-towners that we would suggest a restaurant/ hotel in another state, but we are so close to Oklahoma. It is just a quick drive up 35. So, if you and your family are coming in from the north, this is a great home base for everyone with endless entertainment possibilities.

Future Wedding: Kailey & Dylan

Introducing Kailey and Dylan! We can’t wait for these two to get married on December 11, 2021, as they plan to have a Christmas wedding!!

How did you meet?

Dylan and I first met at a mutual friend’s birthday party & later connected my 8th-grade year (his freshman) when his mom and him were moving into my grandparent’s rental house! I got a message from him on Facebook telling me we were going to be neighbors and “we should definitely hang out sometime!” We talked for quite a bit of time, but he finally asked me to be his girlfriend just in time to walk me in my first day of freshmen year of high school! From that day on, I had a forever school bus partner, travel buddy, my football player to my cheerleader, and my high school sweetheart.

How did he propose?

Dylan and I had been together for just over 7 years when he finally figured enough time had passed – haha. It was my senior year of college and I was on my last spring break ever – going to Walt Disney World of course (I might have a slight obsession with Disney..). Just a few days prior to us leaving for vacation I had found out I had gotten offered an internship at Walt Disney World that I had been praying for. What could POSSIBLY make this trip any better?? Little did I know what was coming… I was actually getting my senior pictures done at the Magic Kingdom itself when the greatest moment of my life happened. My mom and I went around the park with my photographer taking my photos while my best friends and Dylan “explored” the park (or so I thought, turns out they were trying to calm Dylan’s nerves). We met back up at the castle for some group pictures and the last picture she was taking was of me facing the castle. I stood there waiting for her to give me the okay to turn back around but instead I hear Dylan ask me to turn around. He then asked me to marry him, we cried, I cried a WHOLE bunch and then I was surprised with an engagement session in the park. We then celebrated the most magical proposal for the rest of the week at the most magical place on earth. (My engagement ring even has hidden mickeys on it! Good job babe😉)

Why did you pick The French Farmhouse Venue?

We started looking at venues over a year after our engagement, and I didn’t want to really make a decision because I’m so indecisive. We toured what I felt like almost every venue in our 80-mile radius and thought we had made a final decision. There were a few things holding me back from signing and one of those was that there wasn’t a fireplace. We were about a week away from signing our contract on a different venue and I stumbled upon The French Farmhouse’s Instagram. We fell in love with every detail over social media and scheduled a tour for the weekend. Not only did The French Farmhouse check every single one of our boxes, but they have TWO fireplaces!!! The French Farmhouse is everything we could ever dream of and it somehow just perfectly tied mine and Dylans style together, which is exactly what will happen on 12/11/21. From the moment we walked onto the property Dylan and I knew this place was special and to top it off Kelsey and her mom made us feel apart of the family. After we left the tour Dylan and I looked at each other and said “this is the one” and we signed that next weekend. ❤️

What are you most excited about getting married?

A few months before Dylan and I say “I do”, we will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary – “It’s about time” is an understatement! Besides the years that have gone by, we have spent many years bouncing around with college, internships, work and so much more. We are so ready to start our family and continue this life we’ve built so far. Getting to spend a day celebrating us two becoming one with many friends and family – including ones we’ve shared the high school hallways with, college classrooms, and the many family members we’ve both gained throughout the past decade – is just so heartwarming. I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.

Future Wedding: Brookelyn & Lane

Introducing Brookelyn and Lane!! These two cuties who met in the most unexpected place will say “I do” at The French Farmhouse Venue on October 15, 2021 and we could not be more excited!

How did you and Lane meet?

It was the summer of our junior year of high school and we had to take the dreaded SAT. We both went to different schools, so I had to travel to his school to take the test. We knew of each other and had actually talked to each other a few times, but stayed friends. I saw Lane in my assigned testing room and he would not stop staring at me. After each section of the exam he would put his head on the desk and stare at me under his arm, haha. A few hours after the test I decided to reach out to him and we have been together ever since!

How did he propose?

We were having a date night, or so I thought. I begged to stay home and just watch a movie, but Lane was very persistent that we go. The whole car ride he was acting very weird and not saying very much. I thought it was a little weird, but just brushed it off and didn’t think a lot into it. We were going to a the waterfall garden in downtown Dallas and had the worst time finding parking. He kept passing an empty parking lot and I couldn’t figure out why he wouldn’t park there. Little did I know our photographer, who is a good friend of mine, was parked in the lot and he didn’t want me to see her car. After we finally found a spot we walked down into the garden and I saw the photographer and ruined the surprise (oops)! When I saw her he knew he had to do it right then and he popped the question!! We still joke about it to this day how I ruined the surprise.

Why did you choose The French Farmhouse Venue?

I came across the French Farmhouse on Instagram and knew we had to see it. We had looked at so many venues online and never felt like any of them were “the one”. This was actually the first venue we had seen in person. We were in love before we had even stepped foot out of the car and knew right then we didn’t want to look anywhere else. It is absolutely gorgeous and everything we wanted. The atmosphere is amazing. Michelle and Kelsey also made our decision very easy. They are so sweet! We are so excited for our big day!

What are you both most excited about getting married?

Brookelyn: I am so excited to be with my best friend every day, forever! We have so much fun together and I can’t wait to see what new memories we make.

Lane: The thing I am the most excited about getting married is being able to have a cuddle buddy every night unless I get kicked to the couch. Along with being able to start our own family and own family traditions. I can’t wait to have my lifetime fishing partner. I am so excited for this next season of life.

Future Wedding: Tyler & Ashley

Introducing Tyler and Ashley! We can’t wait for these two to say “I DO” on April 10, 2021!

How/When did you two meet?

We met in Physical Therapy school at our class Halloween party. Tyler was dressed as Napoleon Dynamite and I was a biker, what a match. After a few months of saying hi in the hallways, he asked me on a date and we’ve been together since!

How did Tyler propose?

Tyler proposed in Palo Duro Canyon. After hiking all day, we got dressed up and went out to dinner. Then, we returned to the canyon at sunset where Tyler had a photographer waiting to capture the moment! This place is extra special because its where we took our first trip together when we first started dating.

Why did you choose The French Farmhouse Venue?

We wanted a venue that was timeless, and somewhere our guests would enjoy celebrating as much as we will. Visiting the French Farmhouse gave us a glimpse of everything we could hope for in a venue, and can’t wait to see it come to life on the day of.

What are you most excited about for your big day?

We are most excited to begin building a life together as we start our careers, and one day a family!

Future Wedding: Cade and Paige

Introducing Cade and Paige! We are so excited for these two to say “I Do” at The French Farmhouse Venue on June 26, 2021.

Where/how did you meet?

Cade and I have been friends since we were in preschool — my mom says I have been calling Cade my boyfriend ever since. When we got into high school our friendship grew a little faster than others in our friend group. In December of our Junior year of high school, Cade spontaneously asked me on our first date, a trip to see the Christmas lights on the Frisco Square. It didn’t take long for either of us to realize that we wanted more than a simple friendship, so we began dating on December 18, 2014.

How did he propose?

Our proposal was along-awaited moment for just about anyone who knows us. On June 23, 2020, Cade asked me on a date to Red Lobster. When he arrived to pick me up, he was holding roses and champagne glasses, not typical for a date to Red Lobster. When we walked out of the front door of my house, there was a picnic set up on the backside of the tank on my family land. By the grace of God, the rain had let up for about an hour that day, the hour in which Cade popped the question. It was a very cherished and intimate moment, just the two of us, our fur baby, and our parents who came out from the house shortly after.

Why did you pick The French Farmhouse Venue?

It is hard to explain exactly why we chose the French Farmhouse. It is kind of like falling in love – when you know you know. There was a very specific moment on our tour when we had our “this is the one” moment. We had just been shown up to the grooms suite and were headed back down he stairs. When we reached the bottom of the stairs, we looked up and were able to get a view of the entire interior of the venue – it was breath taking. The owners have truly put love and thought into ensuring that each intricate detail is selected to be of significance to couples.

What are you most excited about getting married?

We are most excited to begin tackling the journey of life together, officially. We have weathered a lot of change in our relationship, but this change has got to be the most exciting one. Beginning June 26. 2021, we will be growing as one – facing challenges together, celebrating triumphs together, mourning together, making memories together, traveling together, and most importantly, growing in God together.

Future Wedding: Audrey & Colton

Introducing Audrey and Colton! We can’t wait for these two to say “I DO” on June 20, 2021!

Where/how did you meet?

Audrey:
At the beginning of my sophomore year, my best friend (and future maid of honor) invited me and some girls over to her house for a get-together. She also happened to invite a guy she knew from high school and his roommates. Lucky for me, one of his roommates ended up being incredibly attractive. Myself and said roommate talked and ended up two-stepping in her kitchen by the end of the night. Colton and I went on to be close friends (who definitely had serious crushes on each other) until we began dating later that year.

Colton:
Before my sophomore year of college, I was moving into an apartment complex when my roommate ran into a friend from high school in the stairwell. She was also moving into the complex and invited us over for a game night with friends. I remember my roommate being very reluctant to go, but I insisted because she “might have hot friends.” So we went and met everyone there, but my eyes were set on the most beautiful girl in the room. We got the chance to spend time together and by the end of the night we exchanged phone numbers and the rest is history.

How did he propose?

He knocked it out of the park! He knows I love surprises, so he made sure to do everything behind the scenes with help from our amazing families. The story was that we were meeting at his Aunt and Uncle’s land to leave from there for a nice dinner with his family. I showed up to his apartment after he got off work to head south to Waxahachie and he had gotten me Lilies “just because” and I was none the wiser. Looking back, he was doing many things that revealed his nerves such as dropping keys and missing exits despite being a human compass, but I was oblivious. Upon arrival, I was told everyone was running late. He took me to admire an old wagon on the land before leading me down to the most beautiful setting of blankets, flowers, pictures and hanging tea lights when I finally realized what was happening. He had a poem written about us and our story that we read together and the last line asked if I would marry him. He was on one knee and said some words neither of us can truly remember and I can’t remember if I audibly said yes or just vigorously nodded my head. We popped champagne, laughed, cried, took it all in and Colton prayed over us before then finding out our immediate family members were there to celebrate us. It was one of the best days of my life so far.

Why did you pick The French Farmhouse Venue?

We felt like everything about the venue resembled us. The size was perfect for what we needed and the land was absolutely beautiful. We loved the antique accents and how much apparent thought and care was put into every detail. Kelsey and Michelle were extremely helpful with every question and truly made us feel like friends from the moment we met. We toured while it was still under construction, so Kelsey really helped in ensuring we could visualize what the final product would look like. We did tons of research for venues around the DFW area and felt sure the moment we left The French Farmhouse Venue after visiting that it was where we wanted to make and celebrate our covenant to each other.

What are you most excited about getting married?

Audrey:
I am so excited to get to do life with my best friend forever! He is the person I love most in the world and the fact that I get to build a home and a legacy with him still blows me away. Life is going to be so much fun.

Colton:
In the past 4 years that I have known Audrey, we have grown tremendously in all walks of life including with each other. If so much has changed in 4 years for the better, I can’t wait to see what a lifetime will bring.

Future Wedding: Ryan and Laci

Introducing Ryan and Laci, these two said “I Do” to The French Farmhouse Venue and we could not be more excited for these two to get married on January 23, 2021!

How did Laci and Ryan Meet?

I was visiting someone at the college he was attending, Hendrix, when a mutual friend invited us both to a cookout at her apartment. We barley said two words to each other, but he claims he thought I was attractive. Months had past and he decided not to return to Hendrix after Christmas break, and therefore he enrolled in Grayson College, the school I attended. One day, I saw him wearing a shirt that said “Hendrix” and I knew that I had seen him before, but I wasn’t so sure. So, I messaged our mutual friend and asked what his name was (because I forgot lol) and what his snap chat was. That same day, I snapped him, asking if he had transferred, he said yes, and then the rest is history.

How did the proposal happen?

It was a planned lunch with both sets of our parents, this is all we led her to believe. However, there were secrets that led to the point that I would get down on one knee. I had it all planned out, she would walk into our enclosed patio where string lights and roses that would lead her to the first door. That door was covered in pictures with a letter attached, into the next room she would go, following the trail of roses, where she would meet another door with more pictures and another letter. Finally, on to the last door, she went, with the final letter and the last bit of pictures. Then she opened the door to me, down on one knee and already was shaking her head “yes” before I could even ask her if she would marry me. We celebrated all day with our families and had the best day of our lives (so far)!

Ryan and Laci came and wrote a verse on the walls of the venue while it is under construction that is meaningful to them and their future marriage.

“Be completely humble and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love” Ephesians 4:2

Our Foundation Couples

Our foundation couples hold such a special place in our hearts. These are the couples that have booked their big day while we are still under construction, some when it was just a concrete slab! They trust us and our vision and we can’t wait to bring it all to life. We asked our couples if they wanted to, to come out and write a verse on the walls as this place is going to hold so many memories for them the rest of their life. We can’t wait to celebrate their big day with them as they truly are the foundation of this venue.

P.S. If you have written yours and don’t see it on this post, let me know!
